Ukrainian developer Yaroslav Neznaradko has introduced Intenty, an innovative Android app designed to curb mindless phone use by encouraging users to consciously evaluate their actions. This free app disrupts habitual unlocking by introducing customizable prompts, fostering mindful phone interaction.

    The Inspiration Behind Intenty

Neznaradko’s idea for Intenty stems from his personal struggle with phone overuse back in 2019. Reflecting on his experience, he shared:

“I found myself checking my phone too much. I tried screen time limits, focus modes, and app blockers, but they were rather frustrating than helpful. I wondered, what if I had to state and evaluate my intention before using the phone? That’s where it all started.”

This realization led to the development of an initial version in 2020. The early app simply asked users why they unlocked their phones, planting the seed for the more sophisticated version launched in 2023.Intenty App

    How Intenty Works

The app’s core functionality revolves around nudging users to reflect on their phone usage. Each time a user unlocks their phone, Intenty presents prompts requiring action or thought, such as:

    • State Your Intention: “Why are you unlocking your phone?”
    • Grounding Activities: Breathing exercises or stretching.
    • Posture Checks: Encouraging users to sit up straight or relax their shoulders.
    • Minimalism Prompts: Focusing on essential tasks to avoid unnecessary distractions.

    Customizable Features

Intenty offers flexibility for users to tailor the experience:

    • Prompt Categories: Choose from pre-defined categories like Intention, Grounding, and Minimalism.
    • Custom Prompts: Add personalized nudges to suit individual needs.
    • Nudge Frequency: Set nudges to appear on every 2nd, 3rd, 5th, or 10th unlock.
    • Cooldown Timer: Prevents nudges from appearing immediately after locking, useful for quick responses.

    Premium Features and Subscription

While Intenty is free, it offers additional features through a $1.99 monthly subscription, including:

    • Scheduled Nudges: Customize nudge timings throughout the day.
    • “Hard Mode” Nudges: Mandatory entry prompts for stricter control.
    • Lock Button on Nudge Screen: A shortcut to lock the phone directly from the nudge screen.

    Unlock Tracking and Insights

The app provides an unlock history and answer logs, helping users track their phone use patterns and identify triggers for habitual unlocking.

    Availability and Limitations

Intenty is currently available exclusively for Android users via the Google Play Store. An iOS version was initially developed but faced technical limitations, delaying its availability on Apple devices.

A Step Towards Mindful Technology Use

By combining human-computer interaction research and user-friendly design, Intenty addresses the growing issue of phone addiction. Its approach—encouraging self-awareness and intentionality—offers a refreshing alternative to traditional app blockers and timers.

As Neznaradko’s creation continues to evolve, it may inspire a broader conversation about fostering healthier digital habits.
