The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has been given the green light by the federal cabinet to take stringent action against individuals involved in cybercrimes, including those engaging in propaganda, harassment, and spreading rumors on social media. With these new rules, the NCCIA will play a critical role in combating cybercrime in Pakistan.

    Stern Penalties for Cybercrime Actors

Individuals found guilty of cybercrimes, particularly those targeting state institutions or public figures, face severe punishments. According to the newly approved rules, offenders could be sentenced to 5 to 15 years in prison and face heavy fines. The government’s firm stance signals its determination to address the growing issue of cyber threats and malicious activities online.

    NCCIA’s Role and Global Coordination

The NCCIA, established by the caretaker government in December 2023, has now become fully operational after 11 months of planning. The agency is not only empowered to investigate and take action against cybercriminals within Pakistan but is also authorized to coordinate with international organizations to fight cybercrime on a global scale.

    Replacement of FIA’s Cybercrime Wing

With the NCCIA now in place, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA)’s Cybercrime Wing has been disbanded. Officers from the FIA’s former cybercrime division will serve in the NCCIA for one year, ensuring a smooth transition of operations and expertise.

The federal cabinet’s approval of the NCCIA rules marks a significant step forward in Pakistan’s efforts to combat cybercrime. By introducing stricter penalties and establishing a specialized agency with global coordination capabilities, the government aims to enhance online security and protect citizens from the growing threat of cyberattacks and online harassment
